Why were women and children often employed in the manufacture of persian rugs?

The smaller hands of women and children were better at tying tiny knots.

Women are physically endowed with smaller hands which made them better suited for knitting jobs, and before the spinning machines were invented the knitting industry was a very large employer for women and children.
