x + y = 218

x = y - 47

y - 47 + y = 218

2y - 47 = 218

2y = 218 + 47

2y = 265

y = 265/2 = 132.5

y = 132.5

x = y - 47 = 132.5 - 47 = 85.5

x + y = 132.5 + 85.5 = 218

Let the second number be x, then the first number is x - 47
x + x - 47 = 218
2x = 218 + 47 = 265
x = 265/2 = 132.5

Therefore, the first number is 132.5 - 47 = 85.5 and the second number is 137.5
