The Judiciary Act of 1801 was a partisan political attempt by the Federalists in Congress and the John Quincy Adams administration to overcrowd the federal courts with Federalists... In an attempt to make sure this happened, they passed the Federal Judiciary Act of 1801. The Act reduced the number of Supreme Court Justices from the original six to five.
